Editorial Services

A straightforward proofread will catch typos and spelling errors, and will check grammar, punctuation and consistency. Design and layout can also be checked for consistency at this stage.

A proof-edit will flag up all the above and will also offer more intervention, including suggestions for changes and improvements to the text.

This is often the first stage of the editing process, before proof stage, and will ensure your text's message is clear and accessible, as well as checking it for errors and inconsistencies, and preparing it for the next stage in the publication process.

Your text may need a custom-made combination of proofreading, proof-editing and copy-editing. You may already know exactly what you would like me to focus on, or we may agree that through discussion. Every project is different. I will ensure we have a shared understanding of exactly what I am going to do with your text before I start work.

Prices: You will receive a personal quote for your project, reflecting the work to be undertaken. Let me know your word count, brief and timescale. Sometimes I will ask you to share a sample of the text too.

I also offer:

Beta reading

The aim of beta reading is to provide you with feedback on how your book is likely to land with your target readers. I read widely across many genres of fiction and non-fiction and can give you an idea of how your work will be received. I will review your book with my reader's (rather than editor's) hat on and provide you with a short report setting out what works well and advising on any potential issues from a reader's perspective. Contact me letting me know the genre, your word count, and an indication of what stage of drafting your manuscript is at - I can then provide you with a quote and a timescale.
