Your text is almost finalised. Depending on your publication pathway, it may have already been copy-edited and typeset. A proofread is that final pre-publication pass that will catch typos and spelling errors, and will check grammar, punctuation and consistency. Design and layout can also be checked for consistency at this stage. In traditional publishing, proofreading is carried out after the text is typeset and is the final editing stage before publication.

Your text is almost finalised. It may be a text that is not going through a traditional or formal publishing process and this may be the only editorial pass. A proof-edit will pick up all the same things as a proofread and will also offer more intervention, including suggestions for changes and improvements to the text. A proof-edit may be just right for texts such as brochures, reports, articles and web content.

You have finished writing your text. You are content that it's structurally and developmentally in its final state. It may already have undergone a developmental edit. Any remaining changes will be at sentence level. A copy-edit will ensure your text's message is clear and accessible, as well as check it for errors and inconsistencies, and prepare it for the next stage in the publication process. In traditional publishing copy-editing is carried out before typesetting and proofreading.

Your text may need a custom-made combination of proofreading, proof-editing and copy-editing. You may already know exactly what you would like me to focus on, or we may agree that through discussion. Every project is different. I will ensure we have a shared understanding of exactly what I am going to do with your text and how that will add value before I start work.

Prices 

The cost per 1,000 words is typically £12 for proofreading and £15 for copy-editing. That said, you will receive a personal quote for your project, reflecting the level of intervention and scope of work to be undertaken. Let me know your word count, brief and timescale. I will usually ask you to share a sample of the text for assessment. For some types of text, particularly fiction copy-edits, I will offer you a free sample edit of around 1,000 words so you can decide if you like my editing style before you commit.
